Ned
Eidhler with his wife Ava at the LAHHS dinner, June 8, 2011.
Ned Eichler, our guest speaker at the first annual Los Altos
Hills Historical Society dinner, has had a long and varied career:
student, laborer, building executive, scholar, raconteur; and
others besides.
After graduating from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire,
he was Head of Purchasing at Eichler Homes, the landmark suburban
construction business founded by his father, Joseph Eichler.
After serving in the United States Army Signal Corps in Germany
and France - the experience tempted him to remain in Paris pursuing
La Vie Bohème - he returned to working for Eichler Homes
as sales manager.
To be sure, Ned Eichler argued with his father Joseph over many
aspects of the business, which in fact went bankrupt after breaking
with its successful suburban formula. In 1974 Ned became involved
in the "workout" business, which helped companies
in financial trouble overcome their problems.
Somehow in his busy career, Ned found time to indulge his passion
for history, entering the PhD program at the University of California,
Berkeley. Besides his business experience, therefore, he is
uniquely qualified as an historian to address our historical
society. I hope you will all join me and the other members of
the LAHHS Board in hearing from a fascinating man, and speaker,
Ned Eichler.
